Eva Nadine Martinsen

| April 16, 2014 6:00 AM

Eva Nadine Martinsen passed away April 9, 2014 at the Lake Ridge Senior Living facility in Orem, UT. She was 85. She was born January 22, 1929 to James T. and Lenora Edna(Gee) Clouse in Durango, CO. She graduated from Durango High School in 1947 and married shortly after.

With this marriage Nadine had four children whom she loved dearly. She spent time reading, teaching and playing with them.

She was very involved with her church and civic duties. She thoroughly enjoyed being a Cub Scout den mother, coming up with exciting projects for her little den. She learned to decorate cakes which became masterpieces. She was always sharing her talents with others.

Life threw Nadine a curve ball and she found herself alone with four children. In 1965 she met and married a farmer named George Calvin Martinsen who had two children and moved to Moses Lake, WA. In 1967 the couple had a baby girl making a total of seven children. It was a true "yours, mine and ours" family.

In 1968 Nadine was struck down with a stroke. She was 39 years old. Completely paralyzed on the right side, she wasn't able to talk, walk or read. That didn't stop her. It took time to recover though never regaining full use of her right side. She always had a limp. She'd tell people she and her baby girl learned how to walk, talk, read and write together. Nadine never lost her sense of humor. She laughed before the stroke and she laughed after. She returned to taking care of her one year old daughter and the rest of her family. The family always came first.

A compassionate, loving person, Nadine was there for anyone in need. She was deeply involved with the residents of the local nursing home, volunteering to be the activities director. She brought much joy and they loved her.

After her husband passed away she moved to Utah with her youngest daughter. She was diagnosed with dementia in 2004. She eventually lost her speech and memory of family, but she continued to laugh.

Nadine is preceded in death by her husband, George Calvin Martinsen, step children : Steve Martinsen and Sharla Wright. She is survived by her five children, Bruce W. Brown in Dayton, OH, Gary L. Brown in Dothan, AL, Brad T. Brown and Twila F. Brown in Pagosa Springs, CO, NayLen M. Nielson in Payson, UT and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Special thanks to Lake Ridge Senior Living facility for their great care of Nadine the past 11 years and also to Hospice of Utah for their loving care and concern for Nadine these past few weeks. We'd like to also thank Utah Valley Mortuary for their caring service.

Nadine will be interred next to her parents in Bayfield, CO. She is and will be missed. We will always hear her laughter.
