More students eligible for state college aid
MOSES LAKE - Some state financial aid for post-secondary education may be available to students who are Washington residents but not U.S. citizens, according to Big Bend Community College officials.
Qualifying students are eligible for a program called "need grants" if they have graduated from a Washington high school or earned a GED, subject to certain residence requirements. Applicants must have graduated from a Washington high school or earned a GED. They must have lived in Washington for three years before receiving their diploma or GED, and lived in the state continuously since graduation.
The change in eligibility rules was made possible when the Washington Legislature approved a bill allowing some state residents who lack documentation to apply for need grants. Qualifying students must sign an affidavit to become a permanent resident when they're eligible to apply.
The legislature also increased the funding for need grants, but grants might not be available to all kids who apply, according to state officials. As a result students should make sure as soon as possible that all their application information is accurate and updated, Sly said.
The state financial aid application is only available online, said Doug Sly, the college's public information officer. Students can access the information at www.readysetgrad.org/wasfa. "Washington Application for State Financial Aid" is the link, Sly said.
Students who want to apply to BBCC must also submit a 2014-15 BBCC Data Sheet, which is available on the college's website or at the Financial Aid office, Sly said. Undocumented residents still are prohibited from applying for federal financial aid, he said.
Prospective students who want to know more about financial aid available to them can contact the financial aid office, 509-793-2034.
