MOSES LAKE - A few more vegetables, parking a little further out in the parking lot - see, this healthier lifestyle stuff isn't so hard. Promoting healthier living is the focus of Health and Wellness Week, the week of Sept. 23, and the Health and Wellness Expo, scheduled for Saturday.

A proclamation for Health and Wellness Week was approved by the Moses Lake City Council at its last meeting. It's part of an effort to encourage people to look at, and maybe implement, some healthier choices, Tera Redwine, organizer of the Health and Wellness Expo, said.

"I really appreciate the mayor's efforts in putting this together," Redwine said. "We could not have done the proclamation without his help and the city council's approval."

The Expo is sponsored by the Columbia Basin Herald, Samaritan Healthcare, the Columbia Basin Hospital Foundation, Costco, Moses Lake Community Health Center, and Confluence Health aka Moses Lake Clinic.

Organizers hope to build on the Health and Wellness Expo and use the week prior to it to focus on promoting healthier lifestyles. In 2013 the Dollar Dash fun run, sponsored by Big Bend Community College, will be the same day as the Expo, and Redwine said organizers would like to encourage more activities as the Expo grows. That could include all kind of activities, she said, from fitness challenges among businesses to walkathons at local schools.

The 2013 Health and Wellness Fair will feature more than 60 vendors, including health care providers, local hospitals and clinics, insurance providers, medical technology and medical service vendors, among others.

There are plenty of activities for children, including a teddy bear clinic (where teddy bears and their owners will learn about getting a checkup) and a booth where kids can tie-dye their own T-shirt, Redwine said.

Exhibitors will have plenty of health care and healthy living information, as well as prizes. They include 200 teddy bears for kids at the teddy bear clinic and 500 T-shirts at the tie-dye booth. Confluence Health sponsors the Teddy Bear Clinic, and the T-shirt clinic is sponsored by Moses Lake Community Health Center.

There will also be a raffle for two children's bicycles; the bikes were donated by Walmart.

Other prizes include a Kindle Fire donated by the Columbia Basin Herald, season passes to Mission Ridge ski area, a $300 gift card from Tri-State Outfitters plus Wii consoles including fit systems.
