MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Christian Academy Lions volleyball team won a hard fought match against the Soap Lake Eagles Thursday evening.

The match went back and forth with each team looking to grab the momentum inside the gym, but the Lions were able to prevail (19-25, 27-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-13).

The win had extra meaning for the Lions as first-year head coach Amanda Saenz was able to get her first win at the high school level.

"It was amazing because the whole time I just told the girls that 'you're better and you're stronger' and they've just been conditioning like crazy and they were better conditioned tonight," she said. "I just kept telling them 'rise up, rise up you're better.'"

After a match that saw no team win two sets in a row, MLCA was able to take the fourth set and stave off a Soap Lake rally in the fifth to secure the win.

Team captain Susan Timofeyez led the way for the lions with three aces and four kills.

"She's quiet, but she leads by example," Saenz said. "She's smart, she plays smart volleyball.

Nelly Korneychuck led the Eagles with 14 kills and Lanie Babak added 10 assists and four digs.
