MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Chiefs volleyball team opened their season with a sweep of Sunnyside of Thursday night (25-17, 25-19, 25-15).

Head coach Michael DeHoog made his Moses Lake debut with a win and was happy with the overall performance of the team.

"We had some definite bright spots," he said.

However, the players are still adjusting to the technical aspects and skills DeHoog has tried to instill in them.

"I think they're adapting well," he said.

Carina Leave had a strong game overall with nine kills, nine diggs and a .222 hit percentage.

"She's definitely our most energetic player on the floor," DeHoog said.

Setter Kylee McKay added 19 assists, nine digs and five aces. Ashley Sampson led the Chiefs with 12 digs.

Greta Hammer contributed three aces in the victory.

"Our ball control and servicing was solid, but that can always improve," DeHoog said.

The Chiefs open Columbia Basin Big 9 Conference play Tuesday when they travel to play the Eastmont Wildcats Sept. 17.
