MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake Chiefs cross country team is preparing for their first meet this Saturday at Blue Heron State Park.

Teams from across Washington will descend on the park to compete in the Moses Lake Invitational.

On the boy's side, the Chiefs are looking to build off a solid 2012 season after a third place finish in the Columbia Basin Big 9 Conference. However, tough competition from Wenatchee and eventual state champion Eisenhower prevented Moses Lake from advancing to the state meet.

Cathy Lane, who splits head coaching duties with Jamie Wise, is optimistic about the team's chances to complete their goal of placing ahead of Wenatchee and advancing to state.

The boy's team will be led by Swieso Alek, Justin Johnson and Dominic Conger. Lane has particularly been impressed with the way Alek has ran this off season.

"He has just trained extra hard this summer," she said.

Conger has also been impressive and has ran so well that Lane and Wise decided to move him up to the varsity team.

Saturday's meet includes middle school races as well as JV and varsity races later in the day.
