Basil was the youngest of 3 born to Lonnie and Etta Coffelt on May 10th, 1924 in Taneysville, Missouri. At 4 years of age, Basil was adopted by Eliza and Charlotte Sharp. Basil worked for the Civilian Conservation Core when he came of age and was drafted into the U.S. Army.

During his 21 years of service, Basil achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class specializing in the culinary arts as a mess hall steward/cook (trainer). His most notable achievements spanning WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War included an Army Occupation medal, a Good Conduct medal, and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Basil took pride in his work and was honored by placing 2nd in the" All Army World-Wide Mess" competition (1960), "Post Best TOE Mess" and "U.S. Army Signal Training Center Honor Mess" (1961), and "Signal Training Center Best Mess" (February 1962).

Basil retired from the Army and moved his wife and 3 children to Redding, CA where he taught the culinary arts for Job Corps. Basil was transferred to the Moses Lake facility and retired after 10 years of service. He was then employed by Basic American Foods until his final retirement in 1987. Basil enjoyed his retirement as an avid outdoorsman: raising labs and shelties, camping, fishing, duck hunting, and gardening his famous tomatoes and roses. He was also known for being a loyal Seahawks, Mariners, and Cubs fan.

Basil cherished every moment he was able spend with his family and friends. Every holiday was an event and everyone was always welcome. On August 5th, 1946 he was married to his true love, Lillian Turhune. In their 67 years of marriage they had 3 children: David (wife Treasa), Charlotte (husband Edward), and Donald (wife Debbie). Their family grew to include 8 grandchildren: Carri, Channa, Aaron, Jackie, David, Jennifer, John, and Samantha, 29 great-grandchildren and 2 great/great grandchildren.

Basil was preceded in death by his brother Clarence, his sister Pauline, and his sons David and Donald.
