Old Hotel art exhibit features three Royal Slope women
OTHELLO – The art works of three women who reside on the Royal Slope are being featured through the end of October at the Old Hotel in Othello.
Beverly English, Jane Grant and Marilyn Fakler have been painting for more than 100 years collectively. They paint for the love of art, and the works the Old Hotel for only for show.
It makes sense that these women would be featured together. They get together weekly in a studio at Fakler's house to paint.
Combined, they have lived on the Royal Slope for 118 years. They separate works when they are together, but they like to share ideas to help each other out.
“We enjoy painting pictures of our surroundings,” Fakler said.
Those pictures include water colors, acrylics, oils, colored pencils and ink. More than 18 of them are on display on the first floor of the Old Hotel.
English has been drawing and painting since she was a teenager. She finds art to be relaxing and creative. She has attended various art courses and workshops over the years.
Fakler has had a lifelong interest in art. Crayons and colored pencils were her beginning, and she still uses them. Early subjects were magazine ads of Breck shampoo.
Fakler's first formal training was adult education night classes at Shoreline Community College. She has also attended classes in parks, community centers, private homes and church basements.
Grant knew she could draw and paint as a child, and some people encouraged her to be an artist. More than anything else, Grant wanted family. So she has painted for the joy of painting most of her life.
“It relaxes me,” she said.
Grants early works were not of simple things. She did wildlife while on camping trips with her family.
Grant had occasional art instruction in grammar school, and she took classes in high school. Peers said she was good, and one instructor suggested she consider a career in fashion design.
