Wounded dog coverage strikes a chord with reader

| October 11, 2013 6:00 AM

I read the 2 articles in your paper regarding "Baby Boy" being shot and his owners taking him to Animal World Veterinary Clinic for care.

I have taken my pets to Animal World for 27 years. I am also a personal friend of the owner, Dr. Tanya Prickett DVM. Veterinarians are not given the respect that they deserve.

They go to school, have to learn the same basic courses as an M.D. However, they are dealing with many different species that are not able to voice their symptoms and complaints. Once you are in practice, the pay is substantially less.

In today's world, if you need medical care, you are seen at any hospital, whether you can pay or not. The facility is subsidized for that visit. Veterinarians do not have the same benefits and often do not get paid for their time, efforts and cost to treat their patients.

As a responsible pet owner, I expect to pay, at the time of service, for my pet's needs. If they are hurt, I have the option to euthanize them if the injuries are serious or I can't pay. I don't have to let them suffer.

I feel like you have portrayed Animal World in an unfair way. Why did you not interview the staff at Animal World before you printed your article on September 25? I feel your reporting was irresponsible and you owe Animal World equal time and an apology. There are two sides to every story!

I would recommend Animal World Veterinary Clinic to anyone requiring veterinary services. They are professional and caring.

Editor's note: A follow-up story on "Baby Boy" was published Sept. 26, which included an interview with Dr. Barbara Fehr, of Animal World Veterinary Clinic.
