Chiefs go to battle with Davis
The Chiefs looked to keep their momentum going Tuesday night as they played host to Davis High School in a battle of Big 9 schools. After defeating Eisenhower one week ago to improve to 4-0 in league play, the Chiefs once again ran on to Lions Field as leaders of the Big 9.
Davis is just 1-3 in league play, but with a 4-6 overall record, they are third in the conference standings and a win over Moses Lake would be pivotal at this point in their season to get back into the race for the post-season.
Davis came out with an intensity that showed they knew what was at stake in taking on the conference leading Chiefs, and applied pressure early, taking shots on goal and pushing the pace of the game. Both teams went back and forth through the first ten minutes of play with the Pirates striking first, when Izzy Badillo scored a goal in the 18th minute. Following the score, Moses Lake took control of the ball and made Davis' goalkeeper, Katie Fowler, work to keep her team on top.
As the clock wound down toward halftime, it appeared the Chiefs would head into the locker room trailing, but with just 38 seconds to play in the half, Alysha Overland scored Moses Lake's first goal of the contest and gave them an important confidence boost going into the locker room.
Coming out of the break, the Chiefs were determined to break the 1-1 tie, keeping the ball at their end of the field for the better part of the second half. Although the Chiefs were in control of the pace of the game, the scoreboard doesn't award points for time of possession, and Fowler again was fending off everything Moses Lake was throwing at her.
Caylah Lunning had a shot bounce off the side-bar on a fast break shot at 10 minutes into the second half. After a slew of shots on goal that missed wide or high, Alysha Overland attempted a shot that looked to be here second goal of the night, but a great jumping save by Fowler kept the score knotted at one goal a piece.
The relentless offensive attack of the Chiefs finally proved to be too much for Davis, as Overland scored her second goal of the game at the 6:02 mark in the second half, giving Moses Lake their first lead of the night. From there they didn't look back and Overland would keep the pressure on Davis, scoring again with 2:29 to play in the game and gave her a hat trick for the night.
Behind the great effort from Overland, the Chiefs would hung on to win 3-1, showing they had the ability to come from behind and overcome adversity; improving their record to 5-0 in Big 9 play and 6-4 overall.
