Big Bend drops road match to Walla Walla, 3-0

WALLA WALLA - Big Bend Community College was back on the road Friday night to face the Walla Walla Community College Warriors.
The Vikings were unable to keep up with the high powered Walla Walla offense and fell in three games (19-25, 17-25, 21-25).
The loss drops Spokane to 2-2 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges East region and 7-12 overall. Walla Walla remains undefeated in regional play at 4-0 and improves their record to 15-6 overall.
The young Vikings played tough throughout the match, but head coach Allison Baker says there is still room for improvement.
"The girls played well, they didn't play bad," she said. "But we've definitely play a lot better than that before... beginning of the season we're kind of learning a little and hopefully we can figure some things out and be able to play more steadily."
The Vikings played decent on defense recording seven blocks and 62 digs, but struggled offensively mustering only 25 kills and 24 assists. Baker felt the number of blocks was misleading because many weren't hit over the net.
"I would say we actually struggled on blocks even though it shows we got quite a few," she said. "We were kind of struggling with that because they kept using our blocks."
Freshman outside hitter Shania Bateman led the Vikings with seven kills and a .333 hit percentage.
"She came out to play that game," Baker said. "She's been coming out and just swinging hard. Can't complain about that."
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Reeder and freshman middle blocker Brooke Bowers added five and six kills, respectively. Sophomore setter McKall Miller led all players with 23 assists.
The Vikings are back on the road Wednesday to face Yakima Valley Community College. Currently, the Yaks are winless in the region, but Baker knows not to judge a team by their record.
"I think Yakima is still a really good team," she said. "We've seen them a couple times and I don't think that their record really shows how well they can play. They can be pretty scrappy and they have some big hitters so we can't really say any game is going to be easy for us."
