Fresh News from MarDon: Fourth of July Festivities at MarDon Resort

On Friday, July 5, 2013 we have an All Resorts Golf Cart Parade at 3 p.m. where we hand out prizes and throw candy to kids watching the parade.
At dusk on Friday, July 5 we have a fireworks show in front of MarDon Resort. The community is welcome to come into the resort and watch the fireworks from the Dock, The Pier, or from the Dyke.
The water level on Potholes Reservoir is dropping rapidly with new "Summer Heat." As always happens during our early July irrigation season the dropping water moves fish out of the sand dune area toward the main pool of Potholes Reservoir. Excellent trolling for walleye and trout have been found on the east side of the sand dunes to Medicare Beach and the West side of the dune face to Potholes State Park. For decades fishers have trolled Rapala Shad Raps and Lure Jensen Needle Fish and especially spinner and crawler-set ups such as Max Lures Double Whammy. The predators follow the bait fish and this has been a pattern on Potholes Reservoir forever. With surface water temperatures from 66 degrees to 74 degrees trout and walleye action really heats up.
Top water bass fishing came early in 2013. In late April at the Potholes Open Bass Tournament many competitors had success with floating stick baits such as Floating Rapalas, Devil's Horse Lures, and even buzz baits. With mid 90 degree daytime highs forecasted for this weekend tie on a buzz bait and enjoy what our now retired premier bass guide, Skip Davis, used to call "Cardiac Fishing". There are many ways to catch bass but my favorite remains "Cardiac Fishing" with a buzz bait.
The MarDon Dock continues to provide excellent yellow perch action. The early birds are catching some fine crappie with a mini jig tipped with a grub (maggot). When you enjoy dock fishing at MarDon Resort make sure you have good fishing line and that you correctly set the drag on your reel, in case you hook a big bass, a giant carp, or a jumbo rainbow over 20 inches.
The seep lakes below O'Sullivan Dam continue to provide some good trout action at Canal, Heart, and the Windmill Lakes. Soda, Long, and Crescent Lakes provide good bank and boat fishing. Some giant trout, bass, and walleye are caught in these low pressure seep lakes below the dam.
