ROYAL CITY - An opportunity to learn about global health, laboratory techniques, and careers in biomedical research is being offered to Royal High School students within two weeks

The Biomedical Research Workshop includes lessons and activities developed by the BioQuest Program of the Seattle BioMed Research Institute with financing from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other donors. Mario Godoy-Gonzalez, Royal's ESL/Bilingual/Science educator, will teach the workshop.

"Students will be doing lots of hands-on laboratory experiments that are used in global health and biomedical research," Godoy-Gonzalez said.

These include activities to understand how diseases are transmitted and prevented, techniques to grow, observe, and identify microorganisms, their DNA and proteins and methods to discover and design new medicines and vaccines."

"Working in global health or biomedical research is a great way to combine students' interest in science with their desire to help people around the world," Godoy-Gonzalez said.

Jobs in these fields are predicted to continue growing in Washington State and around the country. This is a great time for Royal students, including incoming freshmen, to get on board.

The workshop will run from Monday, July 29, to Friday, August 16, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. in Godoy's room, 105 in the high school shop.

Students attending the workshop will earn half a credit in science through the Columbia Basin Technical Skills Center and the Wenatchee Valley Technical Skills Center.

For more information or a registration form, contact Mr. Godoy at 346-1121 or the Royal School District at 346-2222.
