Dog catching fees likely to go up

MATTAWA - Mattawa Public works would like to increase kennel fees, and the city attorney will make the necessary changes to the dog ordinance for the city council's approval.

Public Works Director Gary Crowder told the council he wants to raise the rates to $10 per day for standard dogs, $15 per day for vicious dogs and catch fees to $20.

City Attorney Katherine Kenison suggested the dangerous dog ordinance be amended. She will make the necessary changes to the ordinance for the council to review.

Mayor Judy Esser reported to the council that the Lions Club is donating $3,000 for picnic tables in the park. The Lions will also volunteer their time to install these.

Esser reported that the city is still accepting letters of interest for an open council position. The city has received two letters. Three council positions up for re-election this year.

Police Chief John Turley reported that, over four and a half years, the cost to the city for noise complaints from one particular residence is $9,069.

Gary Crowder requested that an electronic meter reading system to be installed. He said some of the benefits include fewer mistakes in reading, better tracking of leaks and less hours spent reading meters.

Kenison backed the proposal. She said that, because of water loss/leaks in one of her other cities, the Washington State Department of Health has put a moratorium on that city.

Crowder reported that the lift station upgrade project for the Scata System was over budget by $4,233. The council approved additional funds.

Crowder reported that Public Works has been filling holes and patching streets.

The council approved ordinance 13-540 - Mellinger Annexation. City Planner Darryl Piercy reported that Cecil Mellinger will be submitting an application for a short plat on the property.

Crowder noted that Public Works has painted some street corners around town red to designate "no parking" areas.
