Quincy man charged in stabbing at baptism

EPHRATA - A Quincy man was accused of stabbing another man at a baptismal party.

Gustavo R. Tapia, 42, was charged with second-degree assault in Grant County Superior Court recently.

It started when Grant County deputies was dispatched to a disturbance in the area of Road S Southwest and Frontage Road South.

According to court documents, someone was stabbed with a knife.

The suspect, later identified as Tapia, and the victim both left the scene.

When the deputy responded to the party there was more than 150 people there, according to court documents.

Security at the party informed law enforcement there was a fight between a small group and someone was stabbed, however no security staff saw the incident.

The deputy also questioned between 15 and 20 people and everyone denied any knowledge of a fight.

According to the sheriff's report, an officer was advised Tapia left in a red truck headed toward Quincy and the victim was on his was to Samaritan Hospital for treatment.

Quincy police stopped Tapia. He and his wife were then detained.

According to court documents, Tapia repeatedly told the deputy that he wasn't in a fight and he didn't stab anyone.

Tapia also told the deputy his son fought with a man who was disrespecting his mother.

He intervened and everyone left.

The victim was contacted at the hospital and said he didn't know who had stabbed him, but would be able to recognize the attacker's face.

Two males who accompanied the victim to the hospital reportedly identified Tapia as the attacker in the incident.

Tapia was arrested and transported to Grant County Jail.

According to the sheriff's report, there was no blood spatter to be found on Tapia's clothes or hands.
