Spuds split doubleheader with Beetles

MOSES LAKE - The Spuds dropped the first game of a doubleheader to the Yakima Beetles at Larson Field Tuesday night, but came back to take the night cap to even their league record to 8-8 on the season.

"It was nice to get the split after a pretty sloppy first game," coach Jameson Lange said. "Louie Reyes got his first start of the season in the second game and met all of our expectations. He's a real competitor, pitched well, kept the ball down, and kept us in the game."

The first game of the twin bill was all Yakima as the Beetles took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Spuds got a run the board with a one-out RBI single to center field by Chase Tunstall to close the gap to 4-1.

Neither team scored in the fifth and sixth innings, but Yakima added two in the top of the seventh to make it 6-1 Beetles, and round out the scoring for the game.

Tunstall got the start and was tagged with the loss after four innings of work on the bump for the Spuds. Zack Wulf came on for three innings of relief.

The Spuds pulled out a come-from-behind win in the second game of the doubleheader to earn the split with the Beetles. Yakima jumped out front early, 1-0.

The score held up until Gunner Raymond hit a one-out triple to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth to give the Spuds their first lead of the game.

The team added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to push the score to 3-1. Yakima answered back with a run in the top of the sixth to tighten things up, 3-2. Both teams posted goose eggs the last two innings of play. Louie Reyes went the distance on the hill to pick up the win.

The split landed the Spuds at 8-8 in league play and into fourth place in the standings.

The two teams are back at it tonight with a twin bill in Yakima. The Spuds are back home Saturday to host a doubleheader at 5 p.m. with the Hanford Flames.
