Chiefs unbeaten in summer league play

KENNEWICK - The Moses Lake girls basketball team won its final two games of the Kamiakin summer league Thursday to finish with an unblemished 8-0 record.

The Chiefs rolled past Pasco 47-25 in the first game of the evening, and then blew out the Kamiakin JV team 74-22 in the second game.

"Our last doubleheader of summer league started with a lopsided victory over Pasco. The team works hard and hustles, but they just didn't have the bodies to keep up with us," coach Matt Strophy said. "We were supposed to play Hanford in the second game, but they were unable to make their games because of their girls' commitments to softball and soccer. At the last minute, the Kamiakin coach was able to put together a JV team so we could at least get a game in. Our experience was too much for them to handle."

Moses Lake jumped out to a 32-9 halftime lead against Pasco, but was only able to put 15 points on the board in the final 16 minutes action.

McKenna Walker and Kaitlyn Stevens led the scoring for the Chiefs with 11 points each.

The second game of the night saw Moses Lake run away with a 52-point win over an inferior opponent in the Kamiakin JV team.

Walker set the pace for the Chiefs with 19 points. Avery Clark added 14, and Alyssa Balderas finished with 10.

Moses Lake wrapped up summer play with six wins at the Kentlake Falcon Summer Jam Basketball Tournament  June 28. Kaitlyn Stevens led the Chiefs scoring for the tournament with 55 points. McKenna Walker and Jessie Loera did not make the trip.

"We were without Jessie and McKenna for this tournament, so we were nervous about how our guards would play. But Madison Tudor and Taylor Stevens (with Emily Olson's help) did a great job running the show.  They proved that we have the depth at the guard position, and we can play 8-10 deep," Strophy said. "Our girls finished their summer schedule on a 16-game winning streak, and a 35-8 overall record. I am really proud of all the girls that participated in our summer basketball program."
