Walleyes take twin bill from Eastmont

MOSES LAKE - Eastmont wasn't the only thing the Walleyes were battling last night at Larson Field as heat exhaustion and hydration were a major concern with game time temperatures soaring to 106 degrees.

The doubleheader was scheduled to start at 4 p.m., but was delayed two hours in hopes the mercury would take a severe drop. But that didn't happen as the temperature dipped a measly two degrees by the first pitch.

"It was definitely warm out there tonight, but it didn't seem unbearable to me," coach Quintz Whitaker said. "Blake Springer did get overheated a bit in the first game and had to sit. But he was okay and came back to play in the second game."

Game 1

The first game of the twin bill was shortened by the 10-run mercy rule as the Walleyes turned back Eastmont 13-0 in five innings.

The Walleyes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after an inning of play, and never looked back as they cruised to the shutout win. The home team blew the game wide open with four runs in the second inning, hung three on the board in the third and added three in the fourth, then shutdown Eastmont in order to close out the game. Hunter Boyd picked up the win on the hill for the Walleyes.

Game 2

Eastmont bounced back to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning in the second game of the twin bill. The Walleyes answered back with four runs to go up top 4-3.

Eastmont re-gained the lead 6-4 with two runs in the top of the third and one in the fourth.

The Walleyes closed the gap to 6-5 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, then put two on the board in the fifth, and four in the sixth to close the game out with a come-from-behind 11-6 win.

Jaime Vela got the start for the Walleyes. Anthony Longmire came on in relief to record the win.

The Walleyes are back in action today when they hit the road to East Wenatchee for a single game with Eastmont.
