Wahluke hoops boys put the stop on Kittitas
MATTAWA - League action was a bit tough for the Wahluke High School boys basketball team last week, but the Warriors had success outside of the South Central A Conference.
Behind the 16 points of Alan Caro, the Warriors defeated Kittitas, 50-42. The usually high-scoring Oscar Onofre was held to seven points.
"Being our last non-league game, I was looking forward to giving lots of guys playing time," coach Cody Marlow said.
The Warriors came out strong, led by Caro's 14 first half points, and never looked back.
SCAC action was not so kind. The Warriors lost to Burbank, 51-32, and Royal, 69-61.
The only player in double figures against Burbank was Dario Prudente with 10 points. Onofre had eight.
"Unfortunately we struggled all night, shooting only 28 percent," Marlow said. "This is a team that we match up really well with, and we weren't able to get the pressure on them like we have normally done."
The loss at Royal was lamentable.
The Warriors' leading scorer, Onofre had to sit out the second period with foul trouble, and Royal won the quarter, 22-11.
Otherwise, Onofre had a stellar night. He knocked down eight of 10 three-point attempts for 24 points. Caro added 16 points, all in the second half. Wahluke won the fourth period, 23-14.
"Our fourth quarter was really good, but Royal got the job done at the free throw line all night," Marlow said. This was a devastating blow to our playoff hopes. All we can do now is try and win out and see what happens."
