Highway 17 collision claims Moses Lake man, teen

MOSES LAKE - A Moses Lake man and a 13-year-old girl were killed Saturday morning when a semi-truck turned in front of their vehicle four miles north of Moses Lake on state Route 17.

Christian G. Schuermann, 40, and Aschlie D. Schuermann, 13, were pronounced dead following the 9:07 a.m. crash. Their relatives were notified at the scene by the Washington State Patrol.

According to a WSP report, it is not known if they were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Orvil L. Magruder, 31, of Ellensburg, was driving a 1995 Peterbilt semi with two flatbed trailers south on state Route 17 when he attempted a left turn onto Northlake Road Northeast.

The semi struck the front of Christian Scheurmann's two-door 1958 Ford Thunderbird, which was travelling in the northbound lane.

Magruder was not injured during the collision.

The roadway was blocked until 1:45 p.m., according to the WSP. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to the WSP report. No charges have been brought against Magruder as of press time Sunday.
