Reasons to support school construction bond

| January 23, 2013 5:00 AM

There are many reasons why I support the Royal School District school construction bond. Most have to do with the experiences I have had as a substitute teacher.

I have seen firsthand what it's like to work in the current facility and how much we take for granted. But the two reasons that stand out the most and why we should support this levy are investment and gangs.

This is an opportunity to invest in our future. A well-funded school district is a place of honor for the entire Royal Slope. Often, the first thing that comes up when in conversation is, "Oh, you're from Royal? They have good schools."

While I hear the frustration expressed in previous letters, to not support this bond because the government is broke and living beyond its means is like cutting your nose off to spite your face. Supporting this bond tells the government that we intend to fix the brokenness by investing in education that will help eradicate the ignorance that is at the root of its brokenness.

Gang activity is a scourge on the entire community. While local law enforcement is doing all it can to deter and control its spread, it needs our help. Supporting this bond sends a message that we value our students and our facilities and intend to take care of them.

Strong community support, awareness of gang involvement, and quick efforts to include and educate "wannabes" can only help slow the spread of this social cancer. Voting for this bond provides the base from which to continue this therapy.

Vote yes for Royal Schools.
