Irene Helen Janke

Irene Helen Janke of Moses Lake, Washington passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 12, 2013 at the age of 86. Irene was born September 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California to Phylo and Bronwen (Evans) Smith. She was raised in Long Beach, and moved to Richmond California during World War II. She graduated from Richmond High School in 1944. Shortly after that she moved to Napa California where she met the love of her life, Richard Janke. They were married August 12, 1945 in Napa and moved to Ronan, Montana where they ran the Janke family farm until 1952.

Irene and Richard raised their family in several cities in Washington, Montana and California staying busy with the sports and activities of 7 children.

In 1977 Irene and Richard purchased property in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho where they built a home that became the center of family gatherings and memories. Together with Richard, Irene created unique and practical gifts out of wood that are treasured by all who received them. She also enjoyed fellowship at church, playing golf, bowling, sewing and crocheting. They returned to Moses Lake in 2007.

Irene is survived by her husband of 67 years, Richard, and the 7 children they raised together; Jerry, Sam, Bill, Janice, Jolene, John and Cheryl, 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, as well as a sister, Nellie Mai. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary, and two grandchildren, Brittany and Darrell.
