Odalis Ozuna and Jaimen Smith explain the purpose of their "Basketball Bounce Experiment" to visitors to the Royal Middle School 8th Grade Science Fair.

ROYAL CITY - Royal Middle School held its annual 8th Grade Science Fair just before Christmas break and this week plans to name the top 10 projects.

With more than 60 booths on display on Dec. 19, there were numerous opportunities for the more than 700 people who visited the fair to learn from the student investigations.

"We've been doing this culmination project for over 10 years now," said Ben Orth, who teaches 8th grade science at Royal Middle School.

"Students pair up, formulate an investigative question, make an educated hypothesis, and then utilize the scientific method by designing an experiment and collecting data which helps lead them to their own scientific conclusions."

The science fair offers the opportunity to couple hard work with fun. Projects at the Fair included investigations from a variety of science fields and included such things as mole experiments, gravity studies, magnetism, and even testing to see which type of animal has the most bacteria in its mouth.

"We'd like to extend a big thanks to all of the parents and community members who took the time to provide an audience for the students to share their findings," Orth said. "Also, a special thanks to all of the elementary teachers who took their entire classes to the Fair. Without a listening audience, we really wouldn't have a fair."
