Girl, 3, dies in Lind house fire
LIND - A 3-year-old girl died in a house fire Wednesday evening on Second Street in Lind.
About 6:30 p.m., the Adams County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a fire at the home, according to Undersheriff John Hunt. Deputy Ben Buriak was across the street and first on the scene.
He was told by the parents their child was still inside, according to reports. Buriak made several attempts to rescue her from the fire but because of the extreme heat and smoke, he was unable to reach the child.
A short time later, the Lind Fire Department arrived on scene. Two firefighters were eventually able to get to the child and removed her from the house, according to reports. The child reportedly suffered severe burns over a large portion of her body. The girl was transported to the Ritzville Hospital, then to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane and eventually to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
The girl was pronounced dead at 5:56 a.m. Thursday, according to Hunt. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
The name of the child was not released. Buriak was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and released.
According to Hunt, the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental but is still under investigation.
