Warnick invites women to personal safety and handgun training course

| February 24, 2013 5:00 AM

MOSES LAKE – Rep. Judy Warnick is joining with the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office and the Central Washington University Police Department to sponsor a defense tactics and firearm safety course for women.

The five-day course is being held Feb. 25 and 27, and March 4, 6 and 9. All sessions will start at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. The classes will take place in the Nicholson Pavilion Room 205 at 715 East Dean Nicholson Blvd. in Ellensburg and cost $35.

The first four sessions will consist of a Rape Aggression Defense System that will teach awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, followed by a realistic simulation of hands-on defense training.

The course will conclude with a final session of firearm safety, handling and use. Firearms will be available for loan if needed, and ammunition will be provided at cost.

“With all of the conversations in the legislature regarding firearms, I think it’s important to educate the public about the safe use of guns,” said Warnick, R-Moses Lake. “As a concealed weapons permit holder and a former member of the Cowboy Mounted Shooter Association, I think it’s important for women to know how to defend themselves and understand how to use a gun. I’m glad to work with the sheriff’s office and the college to sponsor this event and reach out to women in our community who may not know how to defend themselves or who have never shot a gun.”

Women who want to participate should sign up at www.co.kittitas.wa.us/sheriff. Participants do not have to be residents of Kittitas County to join. Space is limited, so it’s recommended people sign up promptly.

“Instead of hosting a traditional town hall, I thought I would do something a little different that would be relevant and at the top of everyone’s minds,” Warnick said. “I still plan to host a tele-town hall with Matt Manweller, my seatmate, to be sure we check in with the folks back home on the issues they care about.”
