Wahluke students hope to rub elbows at We Day
Angelica Alvarado, Marco Herrera, Jaime Tellez, Tony Espindola, Brenda Nolasco write the essays they hope will lead to one of 40 tickets to We Day in Seattle.
MATTAWA - Wahluke Junior High has been selected to participate in an event geared toward inspiring participants to act on behalf of others.
We Day is an annual event organized by the Canadian charity Free the Children that is designed to instill the desire in children to make a "difference" in their local and global communities.
We Day will be held in Seattle at the Key Arena on Wednesday, March 27, from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Students will be encouraged to take action in their community by renowned leaders and performers.
Past We Days have been attended by Magic Johnson, Al Gore, Desmond Tutu, Jennifer Hudson and Nelly Furtado. This year, one of the speakers will be former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev.
"The Wahluke Junior High is very excited for this awesome, great learning opportunity," Langdon said.
The Wahluke Junior High School was allocated 30 tickets. Students wishing to attend will have to work hard for these tickets, going through an application and interview process.
Students must respond to the following essay prompts: describe what qualities and characteristics make a great leader; describe three things you can do to make a difference in the community; describe how you can make the school better.
"This is just an opportunity for our students to practice their writing skills and work toward a really cool inspirational event," Dean of Students Sean Langdon said.
