Wahluke competes at math competition
MATTAWA - Wahluke High Schools 21st Century Program took 11 students to Blaine recently to compete in the Northwest Math Competition, and they got a look at what they need to learn.
"It was a great experience for our students." 21st Century Site Director Jay Scott said. "They gave it their all and realized that there is a lot of math out there still to learn."
Scott said students from other schools that competed were "very" strong in their mathematical abilities.
"Our students did a great job representing Wahluke High School and the 21st Century Program," Scott said. "I am very proud of all of the students for their dedication and commitment. Most importantly, I was extremely proud of the sportsmanship each student displayed to the other teams at the competition."
Students who participated were Marleny Garcia, Wendy Garcia, Thalia Quintero, Saul Ramos, Lucas Tome, Juan Mendoza, Andrea Gutierrez, Anamile Hernandez, Mitzi Cruz, Gabriela Navarrete and Jessica Ledesma.
John Ellsworth was the instructor for this team. He spent many hours preparing the team for the competition.
"Mr. Ellsworth has been an invaluable asset to the 21st Century Program, and there's no way we could have pulled this trip off without his efforts," Scott said.
The next competition will be in March. If the Wahluke students perform well, they could earn a trip to the state finals in Seattle.
