CBSS boys drop game to Waterville

WATERVILLE - The Phoenix made the long trip to Waterville Saturday hoping to knock off the No. 2 seed from the North Conference in a district first round loser-out game against the Shockers.

But an upset wasn't in the cards as Columbia Basin Secondary School (CBSS) dropped the contest 66-21 and was eliminated from postseason play.

"This was the first time the Phoenix have made the district tournament in the past four years and only the third time in the history of the school," coach Bob McCaffery said. "We lost key players to graduation last year, so I knew this year would be an uphill battle. I am proud of our team for making the post season and now with more experience, I expect us to go deeper in the tourney next year." 

Devon Hartman led the offensive output for CBSS with 7 points. Allan Curtis, Chris Gonzalez, and Xavier Garcia scored 4 each, and Jacob Moreno finished with 2. The Phoenix were with out its starting point guard Austin Cochran who was academically ineligible for the playoffs.

"In the first quarter we were able to beat their press better than the first time we played Waterville, and our defense at first did not give up easy points inside," McCaffery said. "I thought Jacob Moreno and Erich Scriven played well for us. Jacob came through with his best rebounding game of the season, and Erich stepped up to replace Devon (Hartman) when he had three early first half fouls."  

Scoring in double figures to lead the Shockers to victory was Jamie Abrahomse who pumped in 22 points.
