Jacks claim title

Cashmere - It's been a productive season for the Quincy wrestling team to date, as the Jacks have claimed the Caribou Trail League title and the District 6 1A championship in the teams first year back in the 1A classification.

On Feb. 2, Quincy racked up 345.5 points to best the competition at the district meet. Chelan finished second with 273 points, Tonasket was third with 235.5, Omak fourth with 128.5, host Cashmere was fifth with 115, Okanogan sixth with 89.5, Brewster seventh with 73, and Cascade eighth with 65 points.

The Jacks recorded four first-place finishes, five seconds, two third and fourth, five fifth-place and three sixth-place finishes.

In the 106 weight class it was Christian Alejandrez besting teammate Victor Salgado, winning by forfeit. Gabe Martinez won by fall over Brewster's Brandon Medina. Ismael Gurrero (120), and Jesus Guzman (126) placed fifth, John Lindquist (132) took fourth, and Spencer Emore (138) and Gerado Guzman (138) finished fifth and sixth in their weight class.

Isias Jimenez lost a 5-2 decision to Juan Garcia to finish second at 145. Anthony Navarro, placed fifth.

At 152, it was Carter Bushman taking top honors winning by fall over Sammy Trudeaux from Omak. Antonio Melendez dropped his match to Austin Booke from Tonasket, 6-4 in overtime to place second at the 160 weight class. Teammate Andy Vargas beat Caleb Riggle from Omak, 2-1 to claim third place. Steven Gomez (170) turned back Tonasket's Austin Knowltom by major decision, 11-3, to finish third. Ulysses Ramirez placed fifth.

It was a battle between Jacks for first place at 182. Cade Wallace won the bragging rights by fall over Jayden Elmore.

Austin Morris placed sixth in the 195 division, Ian Allen took fourth at 220, Gabe Hernandez finished sixth, and in the last match of the tournament, Quincy's Jason Guzman lost by fall to Luis Garcia from Chelan to place second at 285.

The top four placers move on to the regional tournament, which means the Jacks are sending 13 wrestlers (and five alternates) to Chelan Saturday to compete for births in the Mat Classic State Tournament Feb. 15 and 16 at the Tacoma Dome.
