Red Rock kids set for spelling bee

| February 5, 2013 12:00 PM

ROYAL CITY - If you'd like to watch youngsters compete in something other than sports, tomorrow will be your big chance.

Red Rock Elementary fourth and fifth-graders will face in-school spelling bees while trying to qualify for the North Central Washington Regional Bee.

The moderator of the local bees, Brent Whitaker, is well-versed in competition. He's an assistant football coach at Royal High.

According to Red Rock Assistant Principal Rich Gregoire, the competitors will be as nervous as athletes. But they have been preparing diligently, and some of the words may be surprisingly difficult to observers.

At 10 a.m., fourth grade students will have their bee. Then at 1 p.m., the fifth grade students will compete.

The school's finals will include the top 5 from each grade. The champion and the runner-up will advance to the NCW Regional Bee on March 21.

The school's representatives at the NCW Regional could be two fifth graders, two fourth graders or one student of each grade.

Tomorrow's first two bees will be grade level finals. The competition started earlier with home room finals.
