OTHELLO - Motorists traveling along state Route 17 have a new place to refuel, stock up on snacks and stretch their legs.

The Exxon Waterhole 17 recently opened in Othello. The service station and convenience store is located on West Cunningham Road, just off the highway.

Arvind Grewal, who helped with the launch of the business, said there was a need for a gas station along that portion of the road. Drivers used to be able to rely on the old service station at that site, but it had been sitting vacant for many years, he said.

"There was really nothing along these lines on the stretch between Tri-Cities and here," he said.

Drivers will find it convenient that the station's gas and diesel pumps will be accessible 24 hours a day, Grewal said.

"We're really hoping to fill the demand for fuel, especially diesel, along this part of the highway," he said.

The convenience store will open each morning at about 6 a.m., Grewal said. Customers will find a variety of food and drink options inside, he said.

The station sits on an estimated 5 acres, and Grewal said there are plans to expand in the future.

The Othello community celebrated the grand opening of the station Wednesday. Residents were treated to a barbecue and giveaways.

Station owners also held a food drive for the Othello Food Bank that day.

Mayor Tim Wilson, who attended the grand opening, said he was glad to see a station open back up along the highway.

"We're excited you're here," he said. "This is a benefit for drivers along the highway who need somewhere to stop,"

The opening of the station added about 10 to 15 jobs in the area, Grewal said.
