Ruby Holloway

The smile, the twinkle in the eye, the laugh and the quick retort describes the wise and kind woman Ruby Holloway.

She died on August 14th, 2013, in Santa Fe, NM. where she had moved to be close to her daughter, Betty. Ruby's home for 59 years was in Quincy, WA, where she and her husband Earl came to farm when water arrived on the second block in the valley. Spending her last year in Santa Fe, Ruby's heart remained in Quincy.

Ruby was born in Missouri, the family moved to Twin Falls, ID, in 1918 and Ruby and Earl moved to Quincy in 1953. During Ruby's 100 ? years, she used her skills farming with a team of horses, sewing clothing for the family, irrigating, cultivating very straight rows without the GPS, driving truck and tractor, raising chickens, and raising a whopper of a garden, working on the potato digger, and in the scale house, maintaining the financials for the farm, and in her 90's authoring a book about her life.

She gave the gift of love and patience to her husband Earl and two children Robert and Betty.

Ruby along with her husband Earl had significant commitment to education, helping many family members finish their education in addition to establishing a scholarship fund at Big Bend College.

Coming from the early depression generation, through hard work and commitment Ruby along with partner Earl were like the typical pioneers. They started with nothing, worked hard, took risks and met the challenges that progress demands. They were rewarded for their hard work with the satisfaction of realizing their dreams, owning a farm of their own and providing for their security while helping a great variety of people along the way.

Ruby was born to George S. Cope and Ozia Vaughn Cope December 24, 1912. She was one of eight children with one surviving sister Babe Kirby of Ephrata. She is also survived by her daughter, Betty and son-in-law Ray of Santa Fe, daughter-in-law, Agnes Holloway of Ephrata; and grandchildren, Cindy and husband Daniel Robledo, of Spokane; Andy Kersting of Washington, D. C.; and Kandise and Chris Gilbertson, of Steamboat Springs, Co., four great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

At 100 Ruby's goals were to leave this life with no debts and to 'walk as long as I can.' She achieved both.

Celebration of Life service will be on Monday August 19th 1:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, Quincy, Washington. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Earl and Ruby Holloway Memorial Scholarship Fund at Big Bend Community College Foundation, 7662 St NE, Moses Lake, WA 98837.
