Othello's Killian Korn features new flavors at fair

MOSES LAKE - Othello company Killian Korn recently added some new varieties to their flavored popcorn lineup.

Elden Killian said customers can visit the Killian Korn booth at the Grant County Fair to taste the new Cheesy Caramel and Frosted Knickerdoodle flavors. Customers will also find Killian Korn staples like Macadamia Nut, Caramel Apple and Huckleberry popcorn, among others, at the booth, he said.

The Cheesy Caramel popcorn features a cheese popcorn with a hint of caramel, Killian said. While it may seem like an odd combination, the flavors actually go really well together, he said.

Killian said he has been wanting to make the Frosted Knickerdoodle flavor for a while now. It's similar to a snickerdoodle cookie, he said.

Both flavors were created last year. However, since the popcorn is mostly a seasonal product, this is the first year the company has really been able to market the new flavors, Killian said.

"We're definitely busy in the summer, during fair season," he said.

He said the company does most of its business at fairs and other shows around the region. Killian Korn has had a presence at the Grant County Fair for about 10 years, Killian said. They also take their product as far as the west side of the state, to the Puyallup Fair, he said.

Since customers can also order popcorn online or by mail, business picks up around the holidays as well, Killian said. Some Basin stores also carry some Killian Korn varieties, he said.

Killian's parents, Dennis and Donna Killian, started the flavored popcorn business in 1987.

Although he has tried almost all of the flavors at one point or another, Killian said his favorite is still Killian's Krunch. Killian's Krunch has chocolate-covered popcorn, almonds, cashews and pecans, he said.
