NIE golf tournament raises $9,000

MOSES LAKE - The Newspapers in Education golf tournament held at Moses Pointe on Saturday was a great success.
According to Organizer Tom Hinde, the tournament raised just over $9,000 for the program.
Funds raised from the tournament will go toward the 2013-14 school year.
Teams competed in a four-person scramble with extra prizes at each golf hole.
The Moses Lake School District team comprised of Dave Balcom, Loren Sandhop, Brett Baum and Bob Shacklett was the low net team with a score of 45.
Royal City School District represented by Elijah Perkins, Andrew Perkins, Bob Murphy and Joseph Perkins was the low gross team with a score of 55.
Andrew Perkins, who teaches at Royal High School, utilizes the NIE program in his classroom.
Other notable winners included Darin Calder and George Moreno with the longest drives of the day on the men's side, while Lori Robbins has the longest drive for the women.
After the tournament, awards were given out and participants were treated to a barbecue lunch, beverages and a gift bag.
Hinde thanked the tournament sponsors, which included Horizon Credit Union, Washington Trust Bank, USA Weekend magazine and Cleanpors Commercial Cleaning service.
The NIE program provides free copies of the Columbia Basin Herald to public and private schools. Classrooms in the newspaper's circulation area are eligible to receive newspapers. Last year, over 90 classes in Coulee City, Ephrata, Soap Lake, Ritzville, Moses Lake, Wilson Creek, Mattawa, Quincy, Othello, Royal City and Warden participated in the program.
