ML chamber hosts fair food booth for non-profits

MOSES LAKE - Basin residents can help support a handful of area non-profits by visiting the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce's food booth at the Grant County Fair next week.

The chamber is letting a different group staff the booth, and take home the net proceeds, each day of fair week, Executive Director Debbie Doran-Martinez said.

She said the idea came from a discussion with fairgrounds staff about how many vendors come from out of the area to set up at the fair. Staff mentioned they wanted to have some of the county's non-profit groups set up a booth so the funds would stay local, Doran-Martinez said.

"I thought why doesn't the chamber facilitate, take on a booth and then allow a different non-profit to come in and operate it," she said.

"Instead of them having to man a booth from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. five days in a row, they can just come in and do it for the day."

The booth's menu will include frozen lemonade, fruit smoothies and frozen chocolate-covered strawberries and bananas. There will also be fresh fruit and vegetable cups.

"We went with a lighter menu after analyzing all the booths out there," Doran-Martinez said. "They were kind of missing the healthier element."

The chamber will staff the booth on Tuesday, to make sure everything runs smoothly, she said. On Wednesday, the Moses Lake High School girl's softball team will take over.

The Moses Lake Youth Hockey organization will run the booth on Thursday, the Hope Agency on Friday and Impact Dance Project on Saturday.

"I encourage people to come and get a cool, refreshing treat and support our local non-profits," Doran-Martinez said.

The chamber's booth will be white with blue trim, and carry the chamber's sign on it, she said.
