Grant County FFA youth ready for livestock sale

| August 7, 2013 12:04 PM

MOSES LAKE — The Grant County Fair is just around the corner and a year’s worth of efforts are ready to be put on the line for judging and profit. The local Future Farmers of America (FFA) are looking forward to getting back money they have spent and putting money toward their future for college.

The FFA livestock auction will be held Friday of the fair, Aug. 16. The livestock has been raised all year by FFA youth who learn about agriculture, animals, responsibility and money. Dick Pulis, of Agri/Com Appraisals and long-time supporter of FFA, says these projects are keeping kids busy and off the streets and off drugs. Pulis was Montana State FFA Officer from 1949 to 1950, and involved in fairs all his life. He is very proud of these kids, he said.

At the auction, community members are encouraged to bid on beef, sheep and hogs, per pound for donation to the FFA. Once won, the winner can take the animal to slaughter for personal use, or a slaughter house will pay the going-rate per pound and the winner pays the difference of their bid, essentially donating the money to the FFA member.

Pulis said 90 percent of FFA members will use their winnings to pay off a year’s worth of feed and care, and put the rest of the money toward college and savings.
