Visit the Moses Lake Dutch Bros., help the Muscular Dystrophy Association

MOSES LAKE - Basin coffee drinkers can help Dutch Bros. Coffee raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by visiting the drive-thru stand May 3.

All proceeds made that day will be donated to the MDA, a group dedicated to fighting Lou Gehrig's Disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

All Dutch Bros. locations are participating in MDA Day, according to a Dutch Bros. release. The event kicks of ALS Awareness Month and is held annually in honor of company co-founder Dane Boersma.

Boersma was diagnosed with ALS in 2005 and died in 2009. ALS affects the parts of the nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement.

There is currently no cure for ALS.

In 2012, Dutch Bros. donated $174,000 to MDA. Since becoming involved with the association in 2007, the coffee company has donated more than $625,000.

The Moses Lake location is owned by Kristen Nelson.

"We're excited to help," Nelson said. "Hopefully we can aid finding a cure to this horrible disease."

Since the Moses Lake location's opening in 2011, Nelson has donated to Basin groups including the Moses Lake Food Bank, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Columbia Basin and the Moses Lake School District.

To date, the Moses Lake team has given about $5,000 to local organizations.

Customers who can't make it to Dutch Bros. on May 3 can still make donations at www.danesdrive.org, according to the release.

The Moses Lake Dutch Bros. is located at 121 N. Stratford Road, next to Walgreens. Friday hours are from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
