Chiefs return from Hermiston

HERMISTON, Ore. - The Chiefs traveled to Hermiston Saturday to take part in the 28th annual Kiwanis Invitational. Moses Lake competed against schools from Eastern Washington and Northeastern Oregon, and turned in some impressive performances.

The girls team (87 points) finished fourth out of 12 that were vying for top honors at the event. Kamiakin was first with 207.5. The boys (44 points), placed eighth out of 11. Host Hermiston was No. 1 with 143.

Girls

Senior Sadie Nielsen had one of her better outings of the season, placing first in the shot put (38-09.25), and setting a personal best in the discus with a throw of 131-03 to earned a second place finish.

Alysha Overland continued to perform well in the 300-meter hurdles, taking second with at time of 47.60. Arlena Hannan (49.62) placed fourth in the event. Overland also finished second (59.73) in the 400-meters. London Cleverly (1:04.21) was sixth.

In the 800, it was Casci Carpenter claiming the third spot with a time of 2:25.99, and Megan Roughan placing eighth at 2:35.55. Roughan also took fourth (5:12.24) in the 1500.

Taylor Yamane (10th) was the top Chief finisher in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.43. Hannan (17.85) came in 12th. Yamane (14.01) placed 11th in the 100 meter dash, and Hannan 14th finishing at 14.18. Stephanie Overland took seventh (28.38) in the 200. Cleverly (28.53) placed eighth. Kayla Grigg turned in an eighth place finish in the javelin with a throw of 98-00, Selina Koon (16-03.25) was third in the long jump, and fourth in the high jump after clearing 4-10.00.

And in the relay events it was the team of Grigg, Cleverly and Alysha and Stephanie Overland finishing third with a time of 50.89 in the 4x100, and Cleverly, Carpenter, Hannan and Stephanie Overland crossing the finish line a 4:10.81 in the 400, which was good enough for second place.

Boys

Lowell Kirkwood placed highest for the boys on the day as he led all runners in the 800-meters, crossing the tape at 2:00.09. Teammate Alek Schweisow (2:06.70) placed sixth in the event. Schweisow also took third in the 1500 with a time of 4:16.61.

In the 3000, it was Dylan Darlington (9:30.69) placing fourth, and Justin Johnson (9:38.90), sixth. Johnson took second in the distance medley with a finish time of 11:35.83.

The top finisher in the 300 hurdles for the Chiefs was Ben Crowell who came in seventh with a time of 45.74.

The 4x400 relay team of Ralph Holt, Crowell, Kirkwood and Schweisow (3:56.23) placed sixth, and Cameron Ballard placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 40-11.50.

Moses Lake is back in on the track Wednesday when the team travels to Yakima for a Big 9 meet at Davis High School.
