Warden sweeps Burbank

BURBANK - Moving up a classification to 1A competition has not been a deterrent for the Warden softball team as the Cougars have defeated every opponent to date to run their record to a perfect 14-0 on the season.

Warden's latest victim was the Columbia-Burbank Coyotes, who dropped a twin bill to the Cougars Saturday.

"Burbank is led by an All-League pitcher, that keeps them in most games," coach Wes Richins said. "It took us a couple innings to adjust to her. She did a good job keeping us off balance. We were down two runs in the first game going into the fifth, then we kicked it in gear."

The Cougars scored 11 runs off 13 hits in a come-from-behind win in game one of the doubleheader. Warden got out to a 4-1 lead after three and half innings of play.

But the Coyotes hung three runs on the board in the bottom of the third to tie the game, then added two in the bottom of the fourth to take their only lead of the contest, 6-4.

Warden responded with two runs in the top of the fifth to even things up again, then posted four in the sixth and one in the seventh to ice the game, 11-6.

Iris Rodriguez, who signed a letter of intent Friday to play for the Wenatchee Knights, belted two home runs and finished with 3 RBI to lead the Cougar offensive attack. Freshman standout pitcher Aaliyah Enriquez ran her record to 7-0 with the win.

Game two of the twin bill was never in doubt as Warden jumped out to a 6-2 lead after three innings of action. The Cougars added eight runs in the top of the fourth and four in the top of the fifth to cruise to the lopsided win.

Bianca Hernandez was the big stick for Warden going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a home run and four RBI.

Enriquez (8-0) picked up her second win in the circle, going five innings, giving up four hits and striking out five Coyotes.

"Aaliyah had another good day in the circle collecting both wins," Richins said. "The wins over Burbank sets up a battle next Saturday at home against two-time defending state champions Connell. We are both undefeated. It's nice to be 14-0 and the underdog."

The first game of the doubleheader against the Eagles gets underway at 11 a.m.
