Moses Lake raises funds for Boston victims

MOSES LAKE - Heather Silvers was at work when she heard about the two bombs that went off at the Boston Marathon Monday.
"I just remember thinking, how horrible," she said.
Although she didn't know any of the Grant County or Adams County runners participating in the race, or any of the victims of the attack, Silvers said she wanted to do something to help.
The blasts killed three and injured more than 140, according to a previous Columbia Basin Herald article. Four Basin runners participated in Monday's race, but they were not injured.
"It didn't personally affect me, but I want the victims to know that someone out there cares," said Silvers. She said she heard about other people around the country who were holding various fundraisers, including walks, to raise funds for the victims of the attack.
"No one really knows where Moses Lake is, but we can still do something," she said. "Why not hold a walk here."
Silvers got together with co-worker Heather Tuerk to set up a race in Moses Lake. About a dozen people walked from Glass House Car and Dog Wash on North Stratford Road to Michael's on the Lake and back Thursday evening.
Participants paid $5 to walk, and they also accepted donations from motorists along the way.
Tuerk said 100 percent of the donations will be sent to the Boston's First Responders Fund on behalf of the people of Moses Lake.
The Boston Firefighter's Credit Union established the First Responders Fund in response to the Boston Marathon bombing earlier this week. Donations will benefit the victims of the attack, according to the credit union's website.
