Moses Lake track shines at home meet

MOSES LAKE - The Chiefs drew oohs and awes from the home crowd as fans were treated to some outstanding performances by the high school track team Wednesday.

The girls dominated the competition, beating Eastmont and Davis in the dual meet, while the boys turned back the Pirates by 60 points, but lost to the Wildcats by seven.

"It was an excellent showing by the girls in our only home meet of the season," coach Nicki Weiland said. "The coaches were proud of all the kids."

Girls

The girls turned in superior efforts in all track and field events as no Chief finished lower than seventh place.

Setting the standard in the first event of the day were Caylah Lunning (17-07.50), Selina Koon (16-07.00) and Stephanie Overland (15-05.50) who placed first, second and third in the long jump. In the 100-meters it was Lunning taking second with a time of 13.18, Taylor Yamane (13.77) placing fourth and Maggie Middleton finishing sixth at 13.98.

London Cleverly (28.03) placed second in the 200, and Stephanie Overland was third with a time of 28.36. Cleverly was first in the 400, crossing the finish line at 1:02.38, and Overland second at 1:02.43.

The 800 competition saw Casci Carpenter and Megan Roughan place one and two with times of 2:33.26 and 2:35.07 respectively, and Ariana Regimbal finishing seventh at 3:00.32. Roughan also placed third (5:45.76) in the 1600. Regimbal (6:25.93) took seventh in the event.

In the 3200 it was Hayden Kersey coming in fourth at 13:52.48, and Gloria Saucedo (14:03.66), fifth.

Moses Lake placed first, second and sixth in the 100 hurdle competition. Yamane was top finisher with a time of 17.02, Arlena Hannan was hot on her heels (17.45) to place runner-up, followed by Heather Carbon at 18.68.

It was a clean sweep in the 300 hurdles with Alysha Overland (47.27) claiming the bragging rights. Hannan (49.12) took second, and Yamane third with a time of 50.05.

The girls continued their domination capturing all three relay events. The 4x100 team of Lunning, Cleverly, Alysha Overland and Kayla Grigg finished two seconds faster than the team from Davis at 50.04. In the 200 it was Hannan, Yamane and Alysha and Stephanie Overland besting the competition crossing the finish line at 1:50.01. And in the 400 it was Carpenter, Hannan, Cleverly and Alysha Overland racing past Eastmont, tuning in a time of 4:13.77. The Wildcats finished the relay at 4:48.99.

Sadie Nielsen took first in the shot (35.07), and first in the discus breaking a school record set earlier this season with a throw of 133-04. Grigg took first in the javelin (108-00). Keiley Garcia (75-05) was fourth and Megan Thompson (64-00), sixth.

Selina Koon bested the high jump competition clearing 5-00. She also placed first (32-05.00) in the triple jump, edging out Carpenter (32-04) who took second and Grigg (30-11.50), who placed third.

And in the pole vault event it was Carbon and Chinaza Abonyi (7-00) tying for third, and Claire Phipps (6-06.00) placing fifth.

"I think the biggest surprises of the girls meet was our freshman placing high in the pole vault," Weiland said. "And Grigg taking first in the javelin as it was only the third time she has competed in the event."

Boys

The boys team had an excellent showing as well on the day, beating the Pirates 100-40, and falling just seven points shy of the Wildcats, 76-69.

"It was an exciting first league meet of the year," coach Kevin Whittall said. " We beat Davis pretty good, but lost a close one to Eastmont, but I'll take the split."

In the individual competition it was Brooks Milbrandt (11.57), Sam Welch (11.64) and Justyn Simmons (11.97) placing fourth, fifth and sixth in the 100-meter dash. Milbrandt also placed second in the 200 with a time of 24.05, Brandon Bastian (25.91) took fifth, and Jason Nunez (29.28) finished seventh.Jamie Carpenter (58.42) placed second in the 400, Bastian (1:01.52) came in fifth, and Hayden Leslie (1:01.89), sixth.

In the 800 it was Lowell Kirkwood taking second with a time of 2:05.73. Alek Schweisow (2:06.28) placed third, and Ralph Holt, fourth with a time of 2:14.81. Schweisow (4:38.89) took top honors in the 1600. Kirkwood was a close second at 4:44.80, Dylan Darlington (4:48.02) placed fourth and Dustin Garcia (5:11.29) finished ninth in the event.

Darlington placed first in the 3200, crossing the finish line at 10:09.95, Justin Johnson (10:28.13) was third, and Garcia (11:17.44), eighth.

In the 110 hurdles it was Robert Strophy taking fifth at 18.18, and Nathanael VanWinkle, sixth at 19.04.

The Chiefs Ben Crowell (44.32) finished third in the 300 hurdles, VanWinkle (48.32) was fourth and Strophy (50.44), fifth.

The 4x100 relay team of Simmons, Bastian, Holt and Brady Anderson placed second with a time of 48.52, and the 400 relay team of Jamie Carpenter, Holt, Kirkwood and Schwiesow nailed down a first place finish crossing the line at 3:45.18.

Cody Oldridge (45-06.00) took second in the shot put, N'Kosi Lattimore (37-05) was fourth, and Colton Rose came in sixth with a put of 36-08.00.

In the discus competition it was Renwil Babcat (96-01) taking sixth, Oldridge (94-01), seventh and Rose (91-08), eighth.

Babcat also placed second in the javelin event with a throw of 141-01. Joshua Boyer (124-02) was seventh.

Cameron Ballard cleared 5-10.00 in the high jump, which landed him in first place. Crowell (5-08.00) took second. Ballard also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 40-11.75.

Simmons (20-00.00) came in third in the long jump, Crowell (19-04.75) was fifth, and Ballard (18-11.00) finished seventh.

And in the pole vault it was they ever steady Cameron Law claiming first, clearing 13-06.00. Cody Wood and Nunez (8-06.00) placed sixth and seventh in the competition.

"There weren't any real surprise performances at the meet," Whittall said. "But if I could award a gold star it would go to Alek (Schweisow). He ran a great 800 and anchored our 400 relay that finished first. Cory (Oldridge) performed well in the shot put too. He has improved every meet and really came on today."

Moses Lake is back in action Saturday when the Chiefs travel to Hermiston for the 28th annual Kiwanis Invite.
