BBCC softball splits doubleheader with YVCC

YAKIMA - The Lady Vikings ended a six-game losing streak with a 6-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader against the Yaks from Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC) Saturday.

The victory improved Big Bend Community College (BBCC) to 3-15 in the NWAACC standings and 7-21 overall.

"It was nice to put a W in the win column," coach Ray Moffitt said. "We cut down on the errors and made some changes in our pitching rotation and that allowed us to earn a split with Yakima."

It's been a long strange trip to quote the Grateful Dead for BBCC as the Vikings are in the midst of a three week road trip that has seen the team drop 12 of 14 games.

Game one of the twin bill against the Yaks saw BBCC fall behind 4-1 after three innings of play.

The Lady Vikings closed the gap to 4-2 with a run in the top of the sixth to get back in it.

But that was a close as the team could get as YVCC added two runs in the bottom of the frame, then held the Lady Vikings off the board in the seventh inning to come away with the win.

Kelsie Salverda was tagged with the loss for BBCC.

Christian Hill-Erickson, Kodi Kuykendall, Katie Martinez and Halee Edulblute had four hits each, and Leyna Downey went the distance in the circle to lead the Lady Vikings to a 6-5 come from behind victory in game two of the doubleheader.

The Yaks got out to a 2-0 lead after two innings of action. BBCC answered back with two runs in the top of the third to tie the game 2-2.

A run in the bottom of the third and fourth innings allowed YVCC to regain the lead, 4-2. The Lady Vikings added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to go back up top 6-4.

The Yaks got one run back in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap to 6-5.

Both teams were held off the board in the eighth and final inning.

The win over YVCC ended a six-game skid for the Lady Vikings.

BBCC continues its torrid road schedule through Sunday.

The team returns home for five doubleheaders to close out the season with the final games against Community Colleges of Spokane May 11.

"We've been on the road for quite some time now," Moffitt said. "Its going to be nice be back in town and play in front of our home crowd."

BBCC is back in action today for a twin bill at Walla Walla University.
