Distinguished Young Women program held Saturday in Moses Lake

MOSES LAKE - One high school junior will be named the Distinguished Young Woman of Moses Lake this weekend.

Ten Moses Lake students will compete for the title and for college scholarship money during the Distinguished Young Women's Rhinestone Round-up Saturday. The event takes place at 7 p.m. at the Moses Lake High School Theater.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Moses Lake UPS Store located next to Safeway at 601 South Pioneer Way, or from any contestant.

This year's contestants are Julisa Jones, Ally Hammer, Haley Sell, Chassady Clary, Madison Bowser, Katie Kehler, LeAnna Knittle, Jaylynn Hernandez, Christian Phillips and Madisyn Lybbert.

The first place winner and two runners-up will win scholarship money to pay for college or other higher education programs, according to a previous Columbia Basin Herald article.

The contestants will be judged during the event on talent, fitness and poise. They will also be judged on their scholastic achievements and how well they perform during an interview.

Event co-chair Bonnie Dorris said each of the contestants will showcase various talents during the competition.

Knittle, the daughter of Pete and Jeanne Knittle, will perform a monologue. Hammer is the daughter of Scott and Jennifer Hammer, and will read a poem during the event's talent portion.

Bowser will play "Through the Storm" on the piano for judges. She is the daughter of Jody and Caryn Bowser.

Sell and Hernandez will both perform a dance number for their talent. Sell is the daughter of Donald and Terry Sell and Hernandez is the daughter of Esther Valdez.

Jones, the daughter of Brent and Cathryn Jones, will entertain judges with her rendition of "You Raise Me Up." Lybbert, the daughter of David and Tamara Lybbert, will perform a vocal solo at the event.

Clary will sing "Blown Away" for judges. She is the daughter of Donald and Dorothy Clary.

Phillips will also perform a vocal solo as her talent, and she is the daughter of Ted and Simone Phillips.

Kehler, the daughter of Mike and Kris Kehler, will give a rendition of "All That Jazz" during the competition.
