Vikings baseball drops twin bill

SPOKANE - Big Bend Community College (BBCC) baseball hit the road to Spokane Saturday looking to earn a split at the very least in doubleheader action against the second place Sasquatch.

But the Vikings were unable to produce enough offense in either game and dropped both contests to Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) by a combined score of 33-7.

The Vikings led 2-0 after their first at bat. But the score didn't hold up long as the Sasquatch answered back with 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead, 5-2. BBCC tied the game 5-5 with 3 runs in the top of the third, and then retook the lead 6-5 with a run in the top of the seventh. CCS responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame, and tacked on 7 runs in the eighth to blow the game wide open.

Starting pitcher Cody Vandever lasted four innings, giving up 5 runs off 7 hits, while walking and striking out three batters. Tyler Schaffer came on in relief for two innings of work and was tagged with the loss. The Vikings committed 5 errors in the game.

A 17-run loss in game was a bitter pill to swallow for the Vikings as BBCC was never in the contest. The Sasquatch took control at the get-go with 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Vikings got 1 run back in the top of the second to close the gap to 3-1.

But CCS added a run in the bottom of the third, 7 in the bottom of the fourth, one in the fifth and 3 runs in the sixth to win in a calk walk.

John Dailey gave up 7 runs off 9 hits in three innings of work on the hill and was hit with the loss for BBCC.

The dual defeats drops the Vikings to 1-7 in the NWAACC East Region standings and 6-14 overall.

BBCC looks to turn things around when the Vikings hit the road tomorrow for doubleheader action against Columbia Basin Community College.
