BBCC baseball splits with Walla Walla

MOSES LAKE - Vikings baseball resumed play with a twin bill at home against Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) Wednesday.
Big Bend Community College (BBCC) took the first game, 5-1, but dropped the second, 6-2, to earn a split with the Warriors and improve its record to 1-5 in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) East Region standings.
"I feel like we took a big step today," coach Pete Doumit said. "We played lights out in the first game, and trailed 1-0 going into the eighth inning of the second, so I think this is a good indication we are turning things around."

Solid pitching, hitting and fielding were the keys to victory for the Vikings in the first game of the doubleheader.
BBCC scored 5 runs of 6 hits while Cody Johns, who went the distance on the hill for the Vikings, limited the Warriors to just 1 run off four hits.
"I felt pretty good out there today after a couple of rough outings in my first two starts," Johns said. "I was able to stay ahead of their batters and got some good run support and that made my job a lot easier."
Goose eggs were posted by both teams through the first three and a half innings. The Warriors struck first with a run in the top of the fourth. BBCC answered back with two in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The Vikings added 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth, then held Walla Walla in check over the last three innings.
"We played like we are capable of playing in this one," Doumit said. "Cody had a great outing. He pitched the way we expected him to pitch at the start of the season. It was a masterful game. He was in control the entire way."

Walla Walla got on the board in game two of the twin bill off a wild pitch by Jordan Higley in the top of the second inning to go up 1-0. The score held up until the Warriors brought 4 runs across the plate in the top of the eighth and 1 in the top of the ninth off reliever Kody Samuels to increase their lead to 6-0.
BBCC got 2 runs back in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't get any closer and dropped the game, 6-2.
"It was Jordan's second outing of the year and we had him on a 100 pitch count," Doumit said. "We brought in Kody who pitched a good seventh inning. But he got nicked with 4 runs in the eighth and that put us behind the eight-ball. But we got a W in the win column after playing three of the top teams to start the season."
BBCC is back on the diamond Saturday when the Vikings hit the road to Spokane to take on the Sasquatch.
