TVCC takes two from BBCC

MOSES LAKE - A pair of set backs at home to Treasure Valley Community College Saturday has the Big Bend Community College (BBCC) Vikings off to an 0-4 start in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) East Region standings.

But coach Pete Doumit says he's not ready to push the panic button.

"We are not that far away from being a decent ball club," he said. "We've played two quality opponents in our first four games ... our kids feel like they can compete ... but we're just not hitting on all cylinders yet."

The Chukars put 2 runs on the board in the first inning and 3 in the top of the second to take an early 5-0 in game one of the doubleheader.

The Vikings got a run back in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to make a game of it, 5-3. But TVCC added a run in the top of the ninth to push the score to 6-3, then held BBCC of the board in the teams' last at bat to come away with the win.

Chris Walker, Chris Lacelle and Rylie Josey had 2 hits each in 4 at bats for the Vikings. Cody Vandever went 5 innings on the hill for BBCC, giving up 5 runs off 8 hits, and was tagged with the loss for the Vikings. TVCC out hit BBCC 12-11.

BBCC rapped out 11 hits in game two of the twin bill and was leading the contest 3-2 going into the sixth inning. But the wheels came of the bus in the sixth and seventh innings as the Chukars scored 5 runs to go up 7-3. TVCC added a run in the top of the ninth to bring the final tally to 8-3 Chukars. The Vikings failed to score over the last 5 innings and finished with 5 errors in the game.

BBCC had plenty of opportunities to put runs on the board, but were unable to capitalize on them.

"I told my guys they must not have any toes left after shooting themselves in the foot with untimely walks and errors in this ball game," Doumit said. "You just can't let that happen and get down early against a good ball club like Treasure Valley if you expect to win."

Walker, Lacelle and John Schmedding had 2 hits each for BBCC. John Dailey was the losing pitcher of record.

The Vikings get a chance to right their ship Wednesday when BBCC hosts a doubleheader against Walla Walla.

"It doesn't get any easier ... Walla Walla is a good ball club too," Doumit said. "But I believe if we continue to work hard and stay the course, we're going to be okay. Heck we're not even half way through the season ... only played four of 28 league games. We just need a couple of wins to get things rolling."

The first pitch against the Warriors is scheduled for 1 p.m.
