MATTAWA - A third body in two weeks was discovered in the Columbia River Thursday near Mattawa.

The body of a man was found around 2:30 p.m. 10 miles south of Mattawa, according to information released Friday by the Grant County Sheriff's Office. He was found under Vernita Bridge, which carries state Highway 24 over the river.

According to sheriff's office reports, witnesses told investigators the man was seen earlier that afternoon with a kayak.

He was found wearing a life vest, and had identification on the body.

The identification was from Eastern Washington, but was not local, said Kyle Foreman, a public information officer with the sheriff's office.

It is unclear whether the identification belongs to the victim or not, he said.

The Grant County Coroner's Office will attempt to determine the cause and manner of the man's death.

They will also try to confirm his identity.

Detectives have found no evidence of foul play.
