Relay for Life throws costume party Saturday

Moses Lake's branch of Relay for Life hosted a spooky soiree Saturday at Pillar Rock Grill. Local pirates, werewolves and zombies in attendance contributed to the group's donation to the American Cancer Society.

"We were looking to do something different," co-organizer Donna Anderson said. "There are so many auctions in the spring; we wanted to change it up, so this is our first Halloween party."

The event featured food from Pillar Rock Grill, games, a silent auction and a live band, "Urban Blue," so that guests could dance. The band played both covers and original songs penned by member Tom Willner.

Willner said of the chance to play for the fundraiser: "I'm really excited because it's the first time we're doing a costume party." He gestured at his suit and fedora. "I'm Elwood Blues. We're getting the band back together!" he said, referring to his costume's origin, the film "The Blues Brothers."

Guest Kathy Strickland was also enthusiastic about the night's offerings. Dressed as a zombie, complete with eerie opaque contact lenses, she said that the event marked her first Halloween party with her spouse, Mike, in their 23 years together.

"It's just so much fun," she said. "I'm glad we could do this together."

Fundraising totals for the event were not available by press time.
