Moses Lake girls shut out Pirates

MOSES LAKE - Stephanie Overland scored two goals and Lizzy McGraw added another as the Chiefs blanked the Pirates 3-0 at Lions Field Thursday to hand Davis its only loss in the last soccer match of the regular season.

Moses Lake finished second in the CBBN standings with an 8-2 record and is the No. 2 seed heading into district play Tuesday.

"This was a huge win ... a big momentum kicker for us," coach Ric Char said. "It couldn't change the standings or the seeding for the district tournament, but it sure was nice to hand Davis its first loss of the season,"

McGraw (Caylah Lunning assist) got the Chiefs on the board at the 7:45 mark in the first half of play to put Moses Lake up 1-0.

The Chiefs increased their lead to 2-0 on Overland's first goal that came off a rebound on a shot on frame by Lunning with 13 minutes to go in the first half.

Overland made it 3-0 in favor of Moses Lake with her second goal of the match, and her fifth in the last two games, one minute into the second half of play.

"Stephanie has come up big for us the past couple of games," Char said. "She's scored five goals this week and has saved us a few times on defense as well."

The win over Davis sets up a first round loser out match at home for the defending district champion Chiefs against Eastmont at Lions Filed at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The winner of the game takes on the winner of the Davis-Wenatchee match for the district championship and a berth in the state tournament.

"Eastmont finished out the season with back to back wins, so we expect this to be a hard-fought match," Char said. "If we win Tuesday, we'll play again Saturday, and if we win that match, we'll get a bid to state and play the No. 7 seed from District 3."

The Chiefs leading scorer Alysha Overland, who injured her ankle last week, will not be available for Tuesday's match, but is expected back for the game Saturday.
