Reader decries Manweller campaign, backs Selmann

| October 17, 2012 6:00 AM

By now, I'm sure you've all seen Matthew Manweller's slick weekly campaign ads. Some of us haven't been fooled, though. Here are some reasons to vote for Kaj Selmann for state representative:

It is likely that the state Legislature will have Democratic majorities. Kaj Selmann, as a moderate Democrat, will add some common sense to the Democrats' agenda.

Because of Prof. Manweller's demonstrated inability to act professionally with those who oppose him, he would be unable to build those relationships. Fred Huber may be able to tell us whether Prof. Manweller learned anything about working with his political opponents through his Faculty Senate service.

Even if the Republicans manage to win a majority, Mr. Selmann will be able to work with the Republicans and represent the district well. Prof. Manweller would be welcome in the Republican caucus, but would be of little benefit to the district unless the Republicans win a majority.

We're practical people in rural Washington. Mr. Selmann knows and reflects this, in contrast to his opponent, an extremist ideologue.

Our representative in Olympia should know government regulation from the business owner's perspective. Mr. Selmann has run four businesses (toner recycling, publishing, farming, and contracting).

Prof. Manweller has laudable experience as a government-employed educator, but his private experience is limited to side projects.

You know where Kaj Selmann stands. You know that he'll take a practical approach to the issues. Prof. Manweller publicly supports limited government for others, but has sought government protection from his own mouth.
